Issue 19 | Pregnancy Safe Treatments
Pregnancy is a time of great change, and your body (and skin!) go through many transformations.
As you embrace the joy of carrying new life, you may also find that your skin needs some extra TLC. The good news is that you can still enjoy facial and brow treatments while pregnant—safely! However, there are a few important considerations and adjustments to ensure that both you and your baby stay healthy and comfortable.
Are Facial and Brow Treatments Safe During Pregnancy?
Yes! Many facial and brow treatments are perfectly safe for pregnant women, but it’s important to let your esthetician know that you’re pregnant - or trying to become pregnant. (Even if it’s early!) Some treatments may require slight adjustments to ensure your safety and comfort.
Pregnancy can bring on new skin challenges, such as dryness, acne, or sensitivity, which means the right facial treatments can help you manage these changes while still being gentle and soothing.
Appointment Accommodations
When you’re pregnant, your comfort and safety are the priority. Here are a few accommodations that may be made to ensure you have a pleasant experience:
-
Positioning and Comfort:
During pregnancy, especially in the later trimesters, lying flat on your back may become uncomfortable. Your esthetician can provide extra pillows to help prop you up or adjust your position so that you’re more comfortable. -
Gentler Techniques:
Certain skin concerns like increased sensitivity or hormonal acne may require more delicate handling. We can modify the intensity of treatments to accommodate for sensitivity, ensuring that your facial is soothing and relaxing. -
Essential Oils & Scents:
Pregnancy can bring about heightened senses, and some scents or essential oils may become overpowering or unpleasant. Be sure to communicate your preferences with your esthetician. They can tailor the experience by using milder, pregnancy-safe essential oils or forgoing them altogether. -
Avoiding Certain Treatments:
While most facials and brow treatments are safe, some should be avoided during pregnancy. For example, treatments involving strong exfoliants and the use of facial devices are better to skip during pregnancy. These treatments are not recommended or tested for safety during pregnancy, so it’s essential to choose gentle options instead.
Which Facial Should You Select During Pregnancy?
While our facial menu offers many amazing options, when selecting a facial during pregnancy it’s best to choose The Custom. Your skin may be more sensitive than usual due to hormonal changes, so treatments that focus on soothing, nourishing, and relaxation are ideal. We’ll talk through a more thorough treatment plan for after the baby comes!
Brow Treatments During Pregnancy
When it comes to brow treatments, there’s good news! You can safely get your brows shaped and tinted during pregnancy. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
-
Sensitivity:
Pregnancy can cause changes in your skin’s sensitivity, so your brow area might be more tender than usual. We do use a gentle specialty wax and can apply a calming oil post treatment to avoid any irritation. -
Lying Comfortably for Brow Shaping:
Just like with facials, comfort is key. If you’re further along in your pregnancy, let your esthetician know if you need a more comfortable position, we’ll be happy to prop your table up during the service. -
When In Doubt - Ask Your Doctor:
Typically brow lamination and lash lift is completely safe during pregnancy - however we always recommend checking in with your doctor if you are unsure. Keep in mind, hormonal changes can also affect your hair, including lashes & brows! The results of your treatment may vary during pregnancy due to these factors.
Pregnancy is a time for self-care, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t continue to enjoy facial and brow treatments to help you look and feel your best! With a few adjustments and a focus on gentle, soothing treatments, we can help pamper you safely and effectively.
