Skincare Best Practices for Enjoying the Summer Sun

Summer is the season for fun in the sun, beach days, poolside lounging, and outdoor adventures. But with all the excitement of the season, it's important not to forget about taking care of your skin.

The sun’s UV rays can cause damage to your skin, leading to premature aging, sunburns, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Thankfully, with the right routine, you can enjoy the summer while keeping your skin protected and glowing!

Here’s a guide to the best skincare practices for safe fun in the sun.

1. Start with SPF: Your Best Friend in the Sun

The #1 most important skincare product during the summer months is undoubtedly sunscreen

Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause premature aging, sunburn, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher are ideal for everyday use, and you should aim to reapply every two hours when spending time outdoors.

Tips for Effective Sunscreen Use:

  • Choose a Broad-Spectrum SPF: Make sure your sunscreen protects against both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays).

  • Apply Generously: Many people apply too little sunscreen, which can compromise protection. Make sure to cover all exposed skin.

  • Don’t Forget Your Lips and Eyes: Use a lip balm with SPF, and wear sunglasses that block UV rays to protect your delicate eye area.

2. Stay Hydrated: Drink Water, Keep Skin Plump

The summer heat can lead to dehydration, which can negatively affect your skin.

When your skin is dehydrated, it can look dry, dull, and may even show fine lines more visibly. One of the simplest ways to maintain glowing, healthy skin during the summer is by drinking plenty of water.

Hydration Tips:

  • Drink Water Regularly: Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day, more if you're spending extended periods in the sun or exercising.

  • Use Hydrating Skincare: Look for moisturizers with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or aloe. These ingredients help retain moisture in the skin and maintain a supple appearance.

3. Exfoliate to Keep Skin Smooth and Radiant

Exfoliating your skin helps remove dead skin cells, allowing for smoother, more radiant skin.

Regular exfoliation can also help prevent clogged pores, which are common during summer when sweat and sunscreen can mix. However, it’s important to not over-exfoliate, as this can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause irritation.

Exfoliation Tips:

  • Opt for Gentle Exfoliators: Chemical exfoliants with AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid) are great options for gentle exfoliation. These exfoliants work without scrubbing, making them less abrasive, which is especially helpful in the summertime.

  • Exfoliate 1-2 Times a Week: Over-exfoliation can make your skin more sensitive, so keep it to once or twice a week.

4. Be Mindful of Post-Sun Skincare

After a day in the sun, your skin may be feeling dry, tired, or irritated. It's important to replenish and soothe your skin to promote healing.

Post-Sun Skincare Tips:

  • Firm Collagen Gel Mask: Contains hyaluronic acid and aloe. Aloe is a great ingredient for soothing sun-exposed skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties and can help cool down any redness or irritation.

  • Restore Hydration Mask: After sun exposure, your skin needs hydration to restore moisture lost during the day. Use this rich, nourishing mask to help repair the skin barrier.

  • Avoid Harsh Products: Post-sun is not the time for strong exfoliants or products that contain drying ingredients, such as alcohol. Stick with calming, hydrating ingredients to promote healing!

5. Protect Your Skin from Pollutants

Summer often brings more outdoor activities, and with that comes exposure to pollutants, dirt, and sweat. The combination of UV exposure and pollutants can lead to oxidative stress, contributing to premature aging and skin damage.

Protection Tips:

  • Use Antioxidant-Rich Skincare: Look for serums or moisturizers that contain antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and green tea extract. These ingredients help neutralize free radicals and protect your skin from environmental damage.

  • Cleansing is Key: After a day outside, make sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly. This will remove any dirt, sweat, and sunscreen residues to prevent clogged pores and irritation.

Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s also important to protect your skin and maintain a healthy routine. By incorporating SPF, staying hydrated, and following post-sun skincare practices, you can keep your skin glowing and healthy while minimizing damage from sun exposure. The key is balance—enjoy the sun responsibly while properly caring for your skin!
