What is Dermaplaning?

Skin resurfacing (aka dermaplaning) is a facial enhancement that involves the use of a surgical-grade scalpel to gently remove dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (often referred to as "peach fuzz") from the surface of the skin. The procedure exfoliates the skin and provides a smoother texture, allowing for better absorption of skincare products and a more even application of makeup. This treatment is completely non invasive, safe for most skin types, and yields immediate, visible results.

Benefits of Skin Resurfacing

1. Smooth and Radiant Skin

The primary benefit of skin resurfacing is that it instantly smooths the skin’s surface. By removing dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, skin resurfacing uncovers fresher, more youthful skin underneath. As a result, you’ll notice an immediate glow and smoother texture, which can help with the overall appearance of your skin.

2. Enhanced Product Absorption

After skin resurfacing, your skin will be primed for better absorption of skincare products. Since dead skin cells are removed, active ingredients like serums and moisturizers can penetrate deeper into the skin, enhancing their effectiveness. This makes resurfacing a great addition to your regular treatment routine, helping your products work harder for you.

3. Improved Makeup Application

Skin resurfacing creates a smooth, even surface, which makes makeup application easier and more flawless. Without the fine peach fuzz, makeup can be applied more evenly, reducing the chances of product clinging to dry patches or fine hairs. Whether you're going for a natural look or full glam, resurfacing can help achieve a flawless finish - especially before a big event!

4. Diminishes the Appearance of Fine Lines

By exfoliating the skin, skin resurfacing can help minimize the appearance of fine lines and uneven texture. Regular skin resurfacing treatments promote cell turnover, which can improve overall texture and reduce the visibility of imperfections over time.

5. Non-Invasive and No Downtime

One of the most attractive aspects of skin resurfacing is that it's a non-invasive treatment with no significant downtime. You can go about your day immediately after the procedure with the possibility of only a slight redness that fades quickly. It’s a great option for those who want smoother skin without recovery time.

At-Home vs. Professional Dermaplaning

While dermaplaning is trending as a home treatment outside of professional spa settings, it’s important to understand the differences between the two options.

At-Home Dermaplaning

At-home tools typically include handheld razors or devices with smaller, less precise blades than those used by professionals. These tools are designed for you to safely remove dead skin and peach fuzz on your own, but they come with some limitations:

Without proper technique, you could accidentally irritate the skin or cause small nicks. Using a blade close to the face can be tricky, especially without the right training or experience. There’s a higher risk of irritation or injury with improper technique. At-home dermaplaning will also need to be done more frequently, as the results are not as long lasting as true professional treatments.

Professional Dermaplaning

Professional dermaplaning is performed by trained estheticians using medical-grade tools.

A licensed esthetician has the training to use the scalpel safely and effectively, ensuring precision and optimal results. They know how to maneuver the blade around delicate areas like the eyes and jawline. Professional dermaplaning typically yields more significant results since it removes more dead skin and hair. The procedure also targets the skin’s surface with a greater level of accuracy. Since professionals have the expertise to perform the procedure safely, there's less risk of irritation or injury.

Skin resurfacing is a highly effective and non-invasive treatment that can help you achieve smooth, radiant skin. With its ability to exfoliate, enhance product absorption, and create a flawless makeup base, it’s no wonder why resurfacing has gained popularity in the beauty world.

For optimal results, most people benefit from skin resurfacing every 4-6 weeks. This allows enough time for the skin to naturally exfoliate and renew itself. Since resurfacing removes dead skin cells, it's important not to overdo it to avoid irritation or sensitivity.
